Timeless charm and beauty, for hundreds of years wood has been used for flooring. Wood is practical, hardwearing and warm under foot. Every individual piece of flooring is unique as it is in nature, each telling it's own story of how and where it was grown.
As we have changed the way we have built houses over time so has there been a need to adapt the wood flooring that we adore so much to cope with modern day demands such as underfloor heating and or installations onto concrete floors which are now the most common type of sub-floor. Installations such as these require a more stable types of flooring to be used.
Another reason wood flooring has needed to evolve is due to demand, hardwoods take time to grow and so needs to be manufactured in a more sustainable way, part of this solution has been engineered flooring.
Engineered Flooring is the most common type of flooring sold today it consists of an hardwood top or "wear" layer and another substrate on the base, examples of bases can be plyboard, pine ,block board, mdf or oak.
The hardwood top comes in different thicknesses. The thicker the top layer is, denotes if the floor can be re-finished and how many times. The average time between refinishing is probably about 20 years. The overall thickness of the boards can also vary from 10-20mm in thickness, dependent on what is required.
There is a multitude of types, finishes and designs available to choose to give traditional, rustic or contemporary feels, examples are lacquered, oiled and brushed finishes, plank, herringbone and chevron designs, there really are so many to list..
