Wood floor finishes

Differences between Lacquered, UV Oiled and Natural Oiled floors.

Lacquered, UV oiled, and natural oiled floors are three common finishes used in hardwood and engineered wood flooring. Each type of finish has its own characteristics and advantages. Here are the main differences between these finishes:

   Lacquered Floors:

  • Finish Type: Lacquered floors have a top layer of polyurethane or similar coating that forms a hard and durable surface. This coating is often applied in multiple layers and then cured with UV light for added protection.
  • Durability: Lacquered floors are highly durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.
  • Maintenance: They are relatively easy to clean and maintain. Spills can be wiped up without much risk of staining, and regular sweeping or vacuuming is usually sufficient for cleaning.
  • Appearance: Lacquered floors often have a glossy or semi-gloss finish, providing a shiny and polished look. They can be less natural-looking compared to oiled floors, as they tend to have a more uniform appearance.

   UV Oiled Floors:

  • Finish Type: UV oiled floors are coated with a UV-cured oil, which provides a protective layer while preserving the natural appearance of the wood.
  • Durability: UV oiled floors offer a good balance between durability and a natural look. They are more resistant to wear and scratches than completely natural oiled floors.
  • Maintenance: They are relatively easy to maintain and repair. Minor scratches can be spot-treated, and the floor can be refreshed by applying a new layer of UV oil when needed.
  • Appearance: UV oiled floors have a more matte or satin finish compared to lacquered floors. They retain the natural texture and appearance of the wood, giving them a warm and organic look.

    Natural Oiled Floors:

  • Finish Type: Natural oiled floors are treated with oils that penetrate the wood, enhancing its natural colour and grain. These oils may include linseed oil, tung oil, or hard wax oil.
  • Durability: Natural oiled floors are less durable than lacquered or UV oiled floors and can be more susceptible to scratches and staining. They are often chosen for their aesthetic appeal rather than extreme durability.
  • Maintenance: They require more frequent maintenance and re-oiling compared to the other finishes. Spills need to be cleaned promptly to prevent staining, and the floor may need re-oiling every few years to maintain its appearance.

Appearance: Natural oiled floors have a matte, rustic, and natural look. They provide a warm and soft feel underfoot, and they allow the wood's natural character to shine through. However, their appearance can change over time as they develop a patina.

Ultimately, the choice between lacquered, UV oiled, or natural oiled floors depends on your priorities in terms of durability, maintenance, and the desired aesthetic for your space. Each finish has its own unique charm and characteristics, so consider your specific needs and preferences when making a decision.
